Non-Destructive Testing and Inspection of Welding

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) plays a crucial role in welding inspection to ensure the quality and reliability of welded joints.

Here are some standard NDT methods used in the inspection of welding:

  • Visual Inspection:

The most essential inspection form involves visually examining the welded joint to detect surface imperfections, such as cracks, porosity, and incomplete fusion.

  • Radiographic Testing:

X-rays or gamma rays are used to create images of the internal structure of a weld. This method detects internal defects like cracks, porosity, and lack of fusion.

  • Ultrasonic Testing:

Ultrasonic waves are used to inspect welds for internal defects. The reflections are analyzed to identify defects like cracks and lack of fusion.

  • Magnetic Particle Testing:

This method detects surface and near-surface defects in ferromagnetic materials. Magnetic particles are applied to the surface, and a magnetic field attracts the particles to areas with defects.

  • Liquid Penetrant Testing:

This method involves applying a liquid penetrant to the surface of the weld, allowing it to seep into surface-breaking defects.

  • Eddy Current Testing:

Eddy current testing is suitable for detecting surface and near-surface defects. It involves inducing eddy currents in the material and measuring changes in the electromagnetic field caused by defects.

  • Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing:

This advanced form of ultrasonic testing uses multiple ultrasonic elements to steer, focus, and scan beams electronically. It provides detailed information about the size and location of defects.

  • Radiographic Film Interpretation:

Trained personnel interpret radiographic films to identify and evaluate weld defects based on the images produced during radiographic testing.

The choice of the NDT method depends on factors such as the type of material, the welding process used, the weld's size and configuration, and the inspection's specific requirements. A combination of NDT methods may often be employed to thoroughly assess the welded joint's quality.

Where Is Non-Destructive Testing Used?

Non-destructive testing (NDT) is used across various industries to assess the integrity, reliability, and quality of materials, and components, without causing damage to them.

The goal is to detect and evaluate defects, discontinuities, or other imperfections that could compromise the performance or safety of the inspected items.

Here are some industries and applications where NDT is commonly used:

Aerospace:

NDT is crucial in the aerospace industry for inspecting components like aircraft wings, fuselage, engine parts, and landing gear. Techniques such as ultrasonic and radiographic testing are employed to ensure the structural integrity of critical components.

Oil and Gas:

In the oil and gas industry, NDT is used for inspecting pipelines, pressure vessels, storage tanks, and other equipment. Standard methods include ultrasonic testing, radiographic testing, and magnetic particle testing.

Power Generation:

NDT plays a vital role in power plants, where components like turbines, boilers, and pipes are subjected to inspection for defects and deterioration. Ultrasonic testing and eddy current testing are commonly used in this industry.

Automotive:

NDT is employed in the automotive industry to inspect welds, castings, and other critical components for defects.

Manufacturing:

Various manufacturing processes involve the use of NDT to ensure the quality of products. This includes the inspection of welds, castings, forgings, and machined components using techniques such as visual inspection, ultrasonic testing, and penetrant testing.

Construction:

In the construction industry, NDT inspects structural components such as bridges, buildings, and tunnels. Ultrasonic testing and ground-penetrating radar are standard methods for assessing the integrity of concrete and other materials.

Marine:

In the maritime industry, NDT inspects ship structures, pipelines, and offshore platforms. Ultrasonic and magnetic particle testing are among the techniques used to assess the integrity of materials.

Nuclear Industry:

The nuclear industry relies on NDT for inspecting components such as reactor vessels, pipes, and steam generators. Ultrasonic testing and radiographic testing are commonly used in this sector.

Medical Industry:

In the medical field, NDT inspects medical devices and equipment. X-ray and ultrasound are examples of NDT techniques applied in medical imaging. The applications of NDT are diverse, and the choice of specific techniques depends on the materials being inspected, the nature of the components, and the desired level of sensitivity in defect detection.

Standards and regulations often govern the use of NDT in different industries to ensure consistent and reliable inspection practices.

Role Of Pre-Shipment Inspection in Bangladesh Industrial Services

Pre-shipment Inspection's role in Industrial Services is to ensure an impartial inspection service for products. This increases the security of the product and its quality and provides cost-effective Inspection that fulfils the customers' needs and minimizes the risk of product rejections from the end-user.

This is the crucial role of Pre-shipment Inspection within industrial services. The pre-shipment Inspection Agency Bangladesh (i.e. The OSS Certification) is usually an Accredited Inspection company which provides Third-Party Inspection to the requirements of the Industry or regulatory agency.

Following the Pre-shipment Inspection and completing the Pre-shipment Inspection, Third-Party Inspection provides the pre-shipment inspection certificate or report of the pre-shipment Inspection to its customers, which is based on the Pre-shipment Inspection agreements terms and conditions between the Buyer-Supplier and the Third-Party Inspection Agency. When an industry utilizes Third-Party Inspection Agency's services, they can be aware of the importance of pre-shipment Inspection for cost-efficiency as well as Product Quality Consistency and the reduction of rejects of the product by the end buyer.

Third-Party Inspection Agencies (i.e., OSS Certification) are typically ISO 17020 Accredited Inspection agencies that follow the established standard for shipment Inspection Methodology to ensure requirements for compliance. However, obtaining the accreditation before conducting the Third-Party Inspection is optional. For instance, if the Certification is performing management system certification, i.e. ISO 9001 Certification, in this scenario, accreditation to ISO 17021-1 is a compulsory prerequisite for CAB.

But, for pre-shipment Inspection and the requirements of the Buyers or any other regulatory authority become obligatory. For ISO Certification, it is an obligatory requirement to get accreditation before performing any Certification tasks (i.e. ISO 9001 Certification, ISO 45001 Certification, ISO 27001 Certification, etc. etc.).

In all cases, for the Third-Party Inspection to be conducted (i.e. Pre-shipment Inspection), the Inspection Agency must have some Standard Pre-shipment Inspection procedures or methods of pre-shipment Inspection. The procedures for Pre-shipment Inspection or methods of pre-shipment Inspection generally offer the flexibility to be customized to meet the inspection requirements of the client.

The pre-shipment inspection procedure is described below (But not limited to)

  • Receipt from Pre-shipment Inspection Request (From the Customer)
  • Requirement for Information about Product Information, the date of Inspection, the location for Inspection and Inspection Specification Requirement of checkpoints (if there are any)
  • Review of the feasibility for pre-shipment Inspection (considering the following factors: Resources available, availability of the required expertise, time of Inspection, Location of Inspection etc. etc.)
  • We offer a pre-shipment inspection fee and other Terms and Conditions for the Customer to review and accept.
  • Pre-shipment Agreement sign-ups Between Third-Party Inspection Agency and Client.
  • performing the Inspection
  • The Pre-shipment Inspection Report was prepared and submitted to the Customer as the pre-shipment Inspection Certificate (If necessary). Except as specified on the pre-shipment inspection Contract

They are the typical Pre-shipment Inspection procedures followed by Pre-shipment Inspection in Bangladesh. This can be included in inspection procedures if the Customer has a particular requirement. This can be customized case to case (by adding the requirement). However, the above process must be followed at a minimum. We've seen this happen when we received the Pre-shipment Inspection that customers inquired about - how they could expect the time that the pre-delivery Inspection.

To better understand how the length of pre-delivery inspections depends on the conditions set out in the Agreement, i.e., inspection contract terms and conditions. Over the last several years, we have witnessed the experience of third-party inspections. The pre-delivery Inspection generally is completed according to the time and date agreed upon. In rare circumstances, it is possible to make some slight changes in the pre-delivery inspection time, but only with the client's prior approval.

Methods for Pre-shipment Inspection

The techniques of pre-shipment Inspection are derived from the requirements of Inspection that include the type of product to be inspected or any other requirements specific to the product. As general guidelines for Pre-shipment Inspection in Bangladesh are followed, the following techniques of pre-shipment inspections are used (unless the client specifies any specific requirements for Inspection).

  • Checking PO to Match the quantity (product-wise)
  • Review of Raw Material report
  • Random Sampling
  • Check Instruments and the status of their calibration
  • Inspection of the Product (Visual Dimensional)
  • Functional Test (if required)
  • Environmental Test (If required)
  • labelling and marking
  • Packing
  • Pre-shipment Inspection Report Preparation
  • The issue of the Pre-shipment Inspection Certificate (if any requirement)

The points above are the general practices of pre-shipment Inspection (pre-shipment Inspection in Bangladesh), which third-party inspection companies are implementing. It isn't restricted to pre-shipment Inspection and can be customized according to the client's requirements.

Advantages of pre-shipment Inspection

In light of the current business requirements, Third-Party Inspection has a vital role within the supply chain. This is why Pre-shipment Inspection must be considered one of the most critical components of the supply chain that are essential for Industrial Services. With the importance of pre-shipment Inspection, there are numerous advantages of pre-shipment Inspection for industrial services, purchasing houses, clients, suppliers and more. The main advantages of Pre-shipment Inspection

  • The Cost for Inspection is reduced (Indirectly decreased overhead costs overall of the product)
  • Enhances the Speedy Delivery of the products
  • Improve the Quality of the Product Consistency
  • Lower the likelihood of rejection of products as End-user
  • Does not meet the requirement of the supply chain
  • On-time Delivery
  • Increase the security of the product
  • Improvement of Satisfaction with Customer

The main advantages of pre-shipment Inspection.

Pre-shipment Inspection Report

The Pre-shipment inspection report includes the following inspections

  • Day of Inspection
  • Where to inspect
  • The Name of the Product and Product Number
  • Client PO # and order Quantity
  • Sample Qty examined and sampling method employed
  • Inspection Observation (Visual, Dimensional, functional, etc.)
  • Photos of Every Stage of Inspection
  • Final Comments of Inspection observation by the Inspector

The content in this blog may be beneficial to organizations to appreciate the significance of Pre-shipment Inspection and the role of Pre-shipment Inspections in the field of Industrial Services. In today's economic climate, the Cost and quality of goods must provide the industry with higher customer satisfaction and business opportunities for new customers in TUV Bangladesh.

It's an intelligent decision by the Industry to implement Third-Party Inspection to cut costs of overheads to improve consistency in supply and ensure that the Customer is happy in terms of Cost, quality and delivery.

Risk-Based Inspection Planning

We use Risk Based Inspection (RBI) planning, a method for planning and inspection based on an assessment/analysis of the probability and a consequence of a component failure.

This systematic approach determines the optimum inspection and monitoring schemes, and detailed inspection and monitoring plans are furnished.

Inspection planning encompasses various activities performed to optimize the use of inspection resources (cost-effective) while at the same time is ensuring the technical integrity of the asset.

By strategically targeting areas based on an RBI, you acquire a cost-effective inspection program that provides a safe and reliable operation.

Asset Corrosion Management

A significant portion of the unplanned events in processing plants is due to erosion and corrosion. Corrosion management is, therefore, critical to maintain the integrity of the facility, increasing the level of safety and improving cost-efficiency.

Corrosion management is a dynamism method that allows us to manage and assess an asset's technical stability that is impacted by material degradation like erosion, corrosion cracks, fatigue, and fatigue.

It is a part of the overall management system described in a Corrosion Management Strategy. A corrosion management strategy aims to define roles and responsibilities, ensure ownership, focus on high-risk procedures, and identify barriers and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Four steps of a continuous cycle:

  1. Planning: A detailed plan is established based on results from a risk assessment and includes inspection, monitoring, and mitigation programs.
  2. Execution: Implementation of defined and planned activities and programs and identifying KPIs to measure critical parameters and ensure corrosion control.
  3. Reporting/measure: Measure and evaluate KPIs and data from inspection, monitoring, and mitigation activities, and prepare status reports and improvements. We gather, analyse and display data using an information system for corrosion management.
  4. Improve: Review the effectiveness of the corrosion management programs, improve the corrosion management activities and take necessary actions.

Subsea and Pipeline Inspection Management

Pipelines represent an essential part of the energy infrastructure. The proper operation of pipelines is essential to a business's capability to sell its assets.

We offer several solutions for these challenges (pipeline integrity management). This includes, among others, operational support, inspection planning, data analysis (e.g., pipeline degradation, remaining lifetime), corrosion modelling recommendations regarding corrosion and materials, and advanced inspection/monitoring for subsea (e.g., vibration, field gradient sensor).

Well Integrity Management

Corrosion control for good operations is performed with a focus on health, safety, and environmental requirements.

Costly workover and loss of production can be avoided by implementing corrosion control for wells and using models and experience to understand the mechanisms driving corrosion. We offer, among others (well Asset Integrity Management certification), corrosion monitoring, analysis, and assessment of pollution for wells (e.g., degradation of tubing, the remaining lifetime of wells/tubing due to corrosion), in along with addressing wellhead fatigue as well as workover and drilling fatigue.
